Famous divorces end in big settlements

In a cautionary tale for Texas millionaires, an actor in a high-profile divorce likely will give his ex-wife half of their fortune in property division.

Kelsey Grammer, made famous as Dr. Frasier Crane on the long-running sitcoms "Cheers" and "Frasier," reportedly has assets of $60 million shared with his ex-wife, Camille. Although officially divorced since February 2011, they have not yet finalized a financial settlement.

With most of their assets in three homes, they will divide the proceeds as soon as the properties sell. Each is expected to walk away with $30 million.

The Grammers were married for 13 years, but their acrimonious divorce unfolded on national television when Camille Grammer was featured on "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills." Kelsey Grammer admitted to his wife that he had begun a relationship with a flight attendant 30 years younger than him.

Kelsey Grammer and the flight attendant have since married and had a child together.

While Camille Grammer will not struggle for money post-divorce, her settlement will not reach the heights of actor Mel Gibson's ex-wife. Gibson and ex-wife Robyn, married in 1980, finalized their long-running divorce nearly a year ago. The Gibsons had seven children together.

With no prenuptial agreement, Robyn Gibson was awarded half of her ex-husband's $850 million fortune, as well as future earnings from residuals, pension benefits and retirement funds.

Both women endured reports of their husbands' infidelities in their marriages. While still married, Mel Gibson carried on a relationship with a much younger Russian singer, with whom he eventually had a child.

The Gibsons married while young, so it is no surprise that they did not have a prenuptial agreement. Camille Grammer was Kelsey Grammer's third wife, and after three failed marriages, perhaps his fourth wife did sign such an agreement. For men or women in Texas who enter a marriage with assets, it is wise to sign a prenuptial pact, as these two divorces show.
