Pay attention to your gut when considering a prenup

You may have a number of reasons for considering a prenuptial agreement, but your decision may just come down to your gut. You feel like the prenup may be helpful or it may be smart. You know what people say about them -- that they're not romantic and that they can make your significant other feel like you already think the marriage will fail. However, you still can't shake the feeling that it would be a good idea.

Experts note that it's very wise to pay attention to your gut. You have that feeling for a reason, and so you need to take it seriously.

For example, one man was considering a prenup because his girlfriend, whom he was planning to marry, simply wasn't good with money management. She was so irresponsible, in fact, that his family had noticed. They told him they had no choice but to refuse to support the relationship unless he could get her to sign a prenup first. They loved him and were worried that he'd let her ruin his finances.

He did get her to sign one and got married, but the marriage didn't last. Fast forward a few years, and the couple was already splitting up. Thanks to the prenup, though, the man could put that relationship behind him without any tangible financial damage. His gut had been right.

This doesn't mean that a prenup is needed every time, but it just shows you that you need to pay attention to what you're thinking and feeling. Even if you're committed to the marriage, it can pay -- literally -- to have a backup plan in place.
