Texas considers co-parenting bill

If you are getting divorced, your spouse may be fighting to get full custody of your children. Many parents experience this heartbreaking conflict, and more often than not they are fathers who wish to share custody of children. While some parents want to control as much of the children's lives as possible, or use access to the children as leverage over their former spouse, this is almost never in the best interests of the child themselves.

Now, Texas lawmakers are promoting a bill that recognizes the value of more equal parenting between divorced parents.

Under the proposed law, courts would recognize the statistical value of coparenting, creating the framework for parents to share parenting responsibilities and privileges more evenly. The bill is based on research that has undergone extensive peer review and has the backing of the National Parents Organization.

According to the National Parents Organization, the numbers speak for themselves — and the numbers can be staggering. Research indicates that children who are raised primarily or solely by one parent account for three out of four of all teens who drop out of high school, nine out of ten runaway teens, and nearly two-thirds of all teen suicides.

If you are fighting to retain your relationship with your child, do not lose heart. Your goal is a worthy one, which may soon have more legal recognition. In these kinds of conflicts, it is always helpful to enlist the guidance of an experienced attorney who can help protect your rights and assist you as you navigate the tricky terrain of parenting the child you love with his or her other parent.
