Millions of Americans, including an untold number of Texans, watched reality star Kim Kardashian’s fairytale wedding last year.
The marriage lasted 72 days before Kardashian filed for divorce.
Now, it appears the divorce won’t be finalized before 2013. Kardashian and her estranged husband, pro basketball player Kris Humphries, are fighting over depositions, creating the delays.
Humphries wants to learn more about depositions given by Kardashian’s mother, Kris Jenner, and her current boyfriend, singer Kanye West. Humphries is seeking an annulment, and his side has said he believes the Jenner and West depositions could bolster his case that their marriage was a fraud from the start.
Attorneys for both Kardashian and Humphries have expressed frustration at the other’s strategy in the case. Humphries contends that Kardashian never planned to continue with the marriage and that it was staged as a plot line for her family’s television show, “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.”
Depositions in the case continue to be taken. Next up on the schedule was Humphries’ new girlfriend. Kardashian’s attorney said Humphries’ side has asked for too much information, including details about the finances of Jenner.
“Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” which appears on E! Entertainment Television, is a moneymaker for the family and the network. The show draws 3 million viewers each week.
It has not been disclosed how much E! paid for the right to televise the lavish wedding ceremony early last fall. Kardashian filed for divorce on Oct. 31, just weeks after the two-part wedding special aired.
The Superior Court judge overseeing the case told the parties to return to court on Nov. 28. He wants to finalize the case by May, if possible.
Proving a marriage was fraudulent from the start is difficult. The judge will need to sort through each of the depositions and all the evidence to determine if the marriage will end in annulment or divorce.
