A once popular singing couple, known as the Captain and Tennille, have decided to end their decades long marriage. The two were most popular in the 1970s with songs focused on how love would “keep us together.” Evidently, those days are gone.
The 38 year marriage is ending in divorce. A court filed divorce petition states that the marriage has become irretrievably broken. In 1975, the same year that they received an award at the Grammy awards for their hit smash “Love Will Keep Us Together,” they stepped up to the altar and exchanged wedding vows. In a subsequent music career, their songs included 14 charting single hits, with seven of them climbing all the way up to the top ten slots. Those instantly recognizable songs include “Shop Around,” “Muskrat Love,” and “Do That To Me One More Time.”
The two retired from the music business in 2008. The childless couple’s divorce petition says that neither spouse is in need of spousal support from the other, so evidently not all the proceeds of four decades of singing and recording have dissipated. The husband has experienced tremors in recent years that prevented him from performing in public, while the wife has kept her hand in, doing a promotional tourist video for a city three years ago, and performing at a few select local music venues.
Upwards of 40 percent of all U.S. marriages end in divorce. A growing number of them, including many in Texas, include couples with at least one partner over the age of 50. Often divorces among older couples involve the division of substantially greater assets, the accumulation of a lifetime, as well as issues surrounding spousal Social Security or military benefits.
