Why do some people divorce less than a year into their marriage?

We hear all the time about celebrities who divorce just months after walking down the aisle. However, it happens to people from all walks of life. While it may seem difficult for friends, families and co-workers to understand why a couple calls it quits so soon, there are many valid reasons for doing so. It’s hard to count the number of celebrity couples who rushed into marriage then promptly filed for divorce just months later.

Why people ended their marriage before reaching their first wedding anniversary was the topic of a recent AskReddit online discussion. Some of the couples had been in a relationship for many years, but things still fell apart shortly after they married.

— Some respondents admitted to having reservations about getting married. However, they felt pressured or “guilt tripped” into it.

— Others said that they got married for reasons like security or being part of a big family.– Cheating was an issue that multiple people mentioned.

— Some people chalked it up to being, as one person put it, “really young, really dumb.”

— Incompatibility was mentioned multiple times, even by people who had been in a long-term relationship with the person they married. For many people, their spouse seemed to become a different person after the marriage.

— Alcohol and drug abuse that began or worsened after the marriage was a repeated scenario.

— One person pointed out one of the dangers in marrying someone after only having a long-distance relationship. There may be things you don’t know until it’s too late, like how much debt he or she has.

One therapist notes that many people go into marriages thinking that they can change the things that bother them about their partner. They blame the problems on temporary circumstances like someone losing a job or even the stress of wedding planning. Many believe that things will get better once they are a married couple. However, once they settle into their marriage, one or both of them realize that they are truly incompatible.

Ending a short marriage can sometimes carry the same financial and legal complications as ending a long one. That’s particularly true in a community property state like Texas. That’s why it is essential to have experienced legal guidance as you go through the process so that you can move on with your life with as few complications as possible.
