Don’t be fooled by common divorce myths

On Behalf of Weinman & Associates, P.C. | Feb 16, 2022 | Divorce, Uncategorized

Are you thinking about ending your marriage in Texas? Divorce can be a tricky and contentious process, but there are ways to make it a lot easier. One of the best things you can do is not to fall for the many common myths that surround this topic. The more you know about how it really works, the better.

Don’t be taken in by the myths

There are many misconceptions that surround the topic of divorce, and they tend to do a lot more harm than good. Many people believe that the point of hiring a lawyer is to punish the other party for their infidelity. In truth, most settlements are never centered on these criteria.

You may also believe the myth that the purpose of the other lawyer is to “take you to the cleaners.” In most divorce cases, the verdict ends in a “no fault” judgment. This is a judgment that divides the property in equal fashion.

Start divorce proceedings with an open mind

If you are convinced that divorce is the only answer to your marital problems, the key to success is to enter the process willing to compromise. The point of a divorce settlement is not to punish your spouse but to divide up your assets and parenting time fairly. You want to be sure that you approach your upcoming divorce with a clear head to avoid basing decisions on emotions alone.

If you feel that there may be a small chance left to salvage your marriage, you can arrange for arbitration or counseling. Whatever you decide, it’s crucial to go by facts and not be waylaid by myths.
