How divorce affects children

On Behalf of Weinman & Associates, P.C. | Jun 17, 2022 | Blog, Divorce

Divorce can be a complicated time for Texas families. Parents have to start relating to one another in a different way, and must come up with a new plan to raise their children. The effects can impact children in different ways as well. While some children may be very vocal about their feelings, others may become withdrawn or start to act out. Throughout every step of the process, you’ll likely be thinking about what is best for your children. Here are some of the ways divorce can affect the youngest members of your family.

Explaining divorce to children

Children can be very resilient, so if you explain the divorce to them in an age-appropriate way, they are more likely to look at this major life change as an adjustment without panicking. While the age of the children is important when it comes to answering their questions, your children may deal with the divorce differently depending on their personality types.

Signs divorce is affecting your children

Once you both inform your children that you’re getting a divorce, you may notice significant changes in your child’s behavior due to the changes in the family dynamic. For instance, if your child is usually a great student, their grades may start suffer during the divorce proceedings. You may also notice that your children lose interest in certain activities that they used to enjoy. They may not want to spend as much time with their friends to avoid talking about the divorce.

Keep in mind that your children may be especially sensitive during this time. Providing a safe outlet for them to talk about their feelings and reassuring your children that you love them can make it a little easier for everyone in the family to get through the challenging transition of divorce.
